REEEE4

I thought we only had to post 3 blogs... So here I am writing my fourth one.
I found this website where they have two columns; one for anti-abortion and another for pro-abortion. They have list of different arguments and it is very interesting. They talk about so many different things. For example, the "connection" between death penalty and abortion and such. There is this one argument that says (it's from anti-abortion side) the constitution never mentioned the abortion, so it is not a constitutional right and pro-abortionlists cannot argue that it is a constitutional right. Yes, there are some weird arguments...

REEEE3

The opposite argument of abortion being morally wrong is that it might be actually morally right because by legalizing abortion, less innocent women will die due to unsafe abortion. Also, people who are pro-abortion do not push people to necessarly like abortion, but to respect women and their rights to make their own choice. Another argument is that our government cannot create morality. For example, Prohibition did not necessarily stop people from drinking. Rather, it encouraged people to disrespect various laws. And there is this other argument which I do not really understand how it is convicing, but it says something about how fetus is directly attached/connected to the women's body and how it only seperates at birth. For this issue, I think pro-life side of the argument is more strong, how when the fetus has a heart and it is beating, then getting an abortion is a murder.

REEEE2

While I was reading articles online about abortion, I came across many articles that had religion for the reason why they were anti-abortion, or pro-life. The main argument for pro-life seems to be something about how it is not morally right. Personally, pro-life side seems to lack convincing examples. It is my personal view and perhaps if I do some more research, I will find some decent examples that could possibly help me have a better understanding of pro-life side's point of view. Their argument is too conceptual and if someone was not raised pro-life, I do not think people who are pro-abortion could "convert" to pro-life.

Resssss

Even though there are many women who are for abortion, we, including myself, do not want to go through the process. It is something that women want to have as a choice. Although I am defending women and how they, or I guess I should say we, should have the right to choose, I'm not necessarily encouraging people to have abortion. But I fail to see where anybody could have the right to choose for the mother to have or not have abortion. Even if the father of the child wants the baby, if he fails to convince the mother, then that is too bad. It's usually the mother who has to take care of the child, deal with issues, give up their career, give up their dreams, give up their time, give up their body, and etc. It influences the mother's future greatly. I'm sure it will affect the father's future as well, however it is rare for fathers to be greatly affected by it.

Research

Since the last time I posted a proposal on my topic, I've talked to several people about this issue. Generally speaking, people seemed interested in this topic as much as I was. Not everyone seemed to agree with me. This one adult who I talked to was conflicted about the issue of younger people like teens getting an abortion.

Abortion

I feel strongly about how women should be able to choose whether or not she wants to keep the baby. Now, I understand that there are consequences where people around the mother have rights to be against the abortion. However, the mother should make the final decision and I think it is people who are around her's job to make her feel comfortable with the choice. When a woman is pregnant, she is already stressed and unstable that I think people should be aware and be thoughtful. I can't even imagine how it would feel like to be pregnant and feel like I don't have any choice but stuck to have the baby. This is something that women should be able to choose because no matter what other people say about it, it does affect the mother the most.

Ellis

I think Ellis's story is very powerful. It gives people who have prejudice a different view or a chance to see a different view of something that he or she is prejudice against. There are several reasons why this story is so powerful. One of them is because it is a personal story, just like Incidents in the life of a slave girl. However, I do not believe that there could be a “solution” because of the fact that not everyone could relate to Ellis’s story. Also, just because someone could relate to his story does not mean he or she will change and get rid of their judgment about certain groups. However, this story encourages people to interact with people who are different from us, which, I think, is a good start to getting rid of prejudice.

yoshino

By “the mainstream is a myth” Yoshino means that the “mainstream” is falsely represented. It is because people need to hide their differences in order to fit in the society. Since everyone is hiding his or her differences, there isn’t any truth.
Yoshino gives various examples to persuade the audience. The examples vary from general ideas to specific cases of discrimination of people for being different. I would say that his reasoning is persuasive because it is personal. He does not only give one general example, but he gives few different specific examples so that different people could relate easily, which makes his argument even stronger to appeal to the audience.
I would define “mainstream” as something that is not deep but only the image of what people see on the surface. Perhaps similar to when you’re at an art museum, when you’re just glancing over at an art piece would be “mainstream”, when you could take more time and really observe what is happening in the piece.

freedom

Mrs. Bruce offers to buy Linda and give her freedom. Linda disagrees with Mrs. Bruce’s idea and turns down the offer. However, Mrs. Bruce buys Linda anyways, and Linda was finally free. At the end of the book, Linda has mixed feelings about this because of three different reasons. One is that she gained her freedom in a rather unusual way, which seems to make her uncomfortable because now she owes Mrs. Bruce. Overall, she seems pretty happy to be free. The reason number two is because she can’t erase the past. Even though she is a free woman, she still has to face prejudices. Also, she can’t forget what happened to her as a slave and how people treated her and her family. Lastly, the last reason why she has mixed feelings is because being free does not necessary mean that she has a “normal” life. at the end of the book, she briefly talks about how she does not have a house where she lives with her children. She is missing the “normal” bits of life, which leads her to feel sad about her life, but at the same time she is free at last.

Passage

Really, any passage where she stops narrating the story and starts reasoning with the readers why she has done certain things or explain how she felt at the moment, she is using her credibility. The very last two paragraphs of the book is an example of a passage in which Jacobs is using her own honesty to establish her credibility. She clearly addresses the audience by writing “readers” so that all the readers know that she is directly speaking to us. By using direct language, her writing becomes more personal. And by making it personal, the readers become more attached to the story, and it is easier for the readers to sympathize with her. She establishes her credibility by talking about how she gained her freedom, which indicates that she was a slave. She does this because knowing that the writer has a legit credibility encourages the readers to believe the writer.

Prejudices

The “socialization process” is something people shape based on their beliefs, morals, attitudes, and perceptions of the culture and subculture, including religion, nationality and social class. Young kids do not usually have prejudices, however, it is because of their parents who make comments about things and how they see things, kids often resemble their parents. Because the parents are the ones who are in charge of the kids, parents are ALWAYS right.
I believe that prejudices or any other beliefs are “instilled” in people’s mind. People’s background, environment (or surrounding), and most importantly the people surrounding are the ones who instill prejudices. Because people adapt and adjust to each other and their environment, they observe and listen to what people do and what people say, and they learn.

Douglas

In his speech, he successfully appeals to logos, ethos and pathos. He was a slave himself; therefore the audience is appealed to pathos. The subject evokes their emotions already, which is the ethos. Then, he does a good job of going step by step with the audience the reason why he doesn’t need to argue that slaves are “people”. One of his arguments was that slave owners “punish” slaves, which means that they force slaves to “think”, and reason. Only the humans can think and reason, which means that slaves are humans.

Jefferson

The image most of the students get of Jefferson is that he is a good man who achieved many things. He has done so many things for the country and he is considered one of the Founding Fathers. In the passage he described slaves as “animals”. However, when you see the picture of his descendents on page 82, there are people who are mixed, which indicates that he slept with his slaves. Jefferson said offensive things in the passage, and one would never imagine that he slept with the “thing” that he was describing. It seemed like he believed that there shouldn’t be an integration of races, however the picture contradicts that. I am a little bit disappointed to really figure out who he is and what he believed. He is different from what the textbooks and other texts made him to be.

DDD

I would say that Cora Tucker is the exact opposite from Willy Loman. When Willy cares so much about what other people think about him, Cora does not care what other people think about her. She tried to help black communities, but people did not care. Therefore, she changed her attitude. This is very different from Willy. Willy tried so many ways to do the right things to succeed, and after failing so many times, he did not change his method. He kept on failing. He focused too much on being well-liked, which was the path for success to him. Tucker ends up being successful by changing her method to reach to the top, when Willy fails horribly and ends up killing himself by not being able to adapt to his changing environment.

___

To Willy it takes a person to be "well-liked" to succeed. I think he believes that each person create their opportunity by improving yourself to be well-liked. By "well-liked", Willy means that the person is liked well and since the person can definitely take an advantage of being liked, the person will be successful.

Emerson

In his essay, Emerson suggests that it takes he or she to understand him or herself to be successful. Emerson was one of the leading transcendentalists; therefore he believed that in order to understand God and yourself was to understand nature since he believed that nature was directly connected to God also to oneself. Emerson, like many other transcendentalists do, believed that government does not affect individuals.
I do not agree with Emerson with how he thinks that government does not affect individuals or shouldn't have any effects on individuals. Because in order for individuals to live peacefully in this society requires some rules which government provides.
It is not easy for individuals to make a firm connection between God, nature, and individuals. And even if people make the connection, it is hard to be completely independent from the government.

speech 2

Derek's speech about his organization, dress for success, was very interesting to me. The organization focus on women who do not have many skills to success and also women who are not confident. Providing services and programs that could help women attain the skills that they need to success is great, however that part was not the part where it got me interested. It was the part where the organization provide clothes and other things to make women look beautiful and give them self-confidence. For some reason, I really enjoy seeing confident people and love the process of helping people look better and feel better about themselves.
When he was talking about the fundraiser and how there was a fashion show, I thought it was really clever to make the 'normal' and successful women as models.

SPeech day 1

Kendal’s presentation about the Juilan center was very interesting. Part of the reasons why I was so interesting was becuase it delt with something not that many organizations are supporting in the nation. It sure is a big problem in this country, however not too many people are aware of it being a big problem. And that is because not many women choose to talk about such things. Kendal's speech made me aware of the domestic violence that was going on around the city and that there was a place that is provided to women who have experienced domestic violence. By starting out the speech with statistics, she got my attention. It was shocking to know how many women go through these things every year. I thought it was a great organization that should be more well known.

RAgged dick

In the reading, Ragged Dick, the idea is that everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed with hard work. He talks about how he succeeded but his story seems like his success is 100% luck. On a contrary, the documentary that we watched in class does not really show people who have succeeded in life, but Moore shows people talking about how it is possible for everyone to succeed in life if they put in efforts and hard work. I think it is possible for people to have chance to succeed if they work hard, but I don't think everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. Some people are just lucky and some people aren't. And obviously, lucky people get to succeed and those who are unlucky get nowhere. I think it is very hypocritical of people who are successful to say that everyone has a chance to succeed, even if they are trying to give everyone hope. It is easier for people who are successful to say that everyone has an equal opportunity because they are not in the position of people who work hard in hopes of succeeding one day. Or even for the people who work hard to just survive, not even dream to succeed. For example, the bunny lady in the documentary sells meats or pets so she could get money to buy food and just survive.

speech SUGHhh

I think I would like to write about scholarships that are provided for the students who are in need. Since this program helps the students who are financially unable to afford paying for their education to be aided with scholarship money, the students can use the help to make themselves self-sufficient. I will have to do some more research about how the students who have recieved help turned out, but I believe it is a great cause. Or if this does not work out, then I think I will be writing about Ambassador for children.

I personally think that visual arguments could persuade more people. I do not know about it being more persuasive, but it might be more effective if you need to convince a lot of people. Because some people are not willing to put time and effort into reading arguments, by attracting people with visuals would be more effective because more people would rather ‘watch’ than ‘read’. I would think that people would want prefer to do the least amount of work as possible while they are being persuade by people. And reading takes a lot more work than watching something even though they could bring the same outcome.

~~~~~
The ethical responsibilities of an author are being knowledgeable, being fair, and building a bridge to audience. It is important for an author to use every resource to appeal to credibility and ethics. An author needs to fully understand his or her point of view before they start writing their argument. Another important thing is to fully understand how the audience would react to the argument. There should be many reasonable examples to back up the argument in order to be fair.
I think our media is bias. Because the media is always competing with each other, they want to attract more people as much as possible. That causes the media to be unfair because they are providing bias reasons and supports.
ahh
A 'pseudo-argument' is an argument based on one's opinion. It does not really have a justifiable reason. The only purpose is to successfully pursuade the audience. For example, someone could say, dogs are better than cats. Some people would argue that cats are better than dogs. It really depends on the persons and their personality. Dogs are better because they are more cuddly. Cats are better because they are more independent. Or some people are scared of cats because of the halloween stories that they tell about black cats. Some people are scared of dogs because they hear about pitbulls and they could easily make a generalization of all dogs being barbaric.
ddd
Appealing to pathos is such a powerful rhetorical device because it is appealing to the audience’s emotion. By using concrete language, specific images, and narrative the authors make a powerful argument. Also by making appropriate style choices, such as how the writer choose to use his or her writing style to persuade and bring out the emotions is very important.
I personally thing pathos is the most powerful out of three rhetorical devices because it deals with feelings. As people, we are more moved by stories that could make us sympathize than some graphs. For example, in Levin's argument about torture, we, the class, was more moved by the fact that it is horrible to kidnap and kill babies than the fact that he interviewed four people.
I am nervous about the score I am going to get on this AP exam, even thought it should not matter. I am nervous to take the test because I know it is going to be a long test that I will not enjoy. I think I am going to struggle with the essays the most. I am hoping to feel pretty compfortable with writing essays with limited time by the end of the year. However with the essays, you have to make an outline and actually think about what how you are going to present your answer and make it sound pretty. The multiple-choice questions are hard because of the time limit but there is only one answer and the choices are limited. I am not sure if I am comfortable with taking this exam and the course other than the fact that I took AP literature last year. It definitely is an advantage for me in a way since I know the set up of the test (even though it probably is a little bit different) and the importance of time management.
Implicit and explicit arguments are both capable of persuading the audience to its view. Both types of arguments have the same purpose, which is to convince the audience. The main difference between them that determine the type is how they use the sources and choose to approach the audience.
An explicit argument is direct and it uses reasons and evidences to make the argument strong. On the other hand, an implicit argument is rather indirect and it does not seem like an argument. An implicit argument often brings out strong emotions in order for people to understand its point of view so that they are easily convinced.
The picture and the poem on page 5-6 are both implicit arguments. The picture does not directly present its objective, however by allowing the audience to be sympathetic to see its point of view. The poem in the book has a theme and it delivers it to the audience in a passive manner. By using figurative language, it makes the audience relate to the problem easier.
5
A big difference between the first and second ad is how they approached the audience. They both have the same goal, which is to prove their objective to the audience. The first ad does it by evoking sympathy. It does not have any explanation of what the photograph is, but by the facial expression of the veterans, it hints that the ad is related to wars; whether or not it is for or against them. On the other hand, the second ad allows the audience to use logic. Instead of hinting the audience that the ad is related to health, it directly states the problem and the suggested solution by inserting texts unlike the first ad. The second ad also included contact information, which strongly encourages the audience to get involved.
These little different aspects of two ads have different influences on their argument. The first argument is weaker than the second argument because it deals with more personal subject. While the food/health is an everyday issue for the majority of the people, wars and veterans, unless they are a part of the military or their family or friend is, it is harder for the general audience to relate the subject.
ps. I think i used the picture on page 5... bc i thought page 3 was page 1 and i got confused and mixed up and all that and all jumbled up and all.. screwed up and all... mixed up.. and all... complicated.... frustrating... yes.. i messed up.
Fuentes highly encourages us to use language to create cultures. By telling stories and describing them, people who have never been to the other countries could get a sense of other cultures. I agree with Fuentes in a seine that it is important to share different cultures. Not many people travel all around the world and experience different cultures. Even if people travel, it is very easy for them to not get the unique cultural experiences since English is the international language. People do not seem to have to know the other language to communicate or travel. Everywhere we go, there are people who can speak English, which makes everything a lot nicer for us. However when we are trying to get to know the other culture the language can be a barrier. For example, there are things that I could not explain to my American friends about some of the Korean expressions unless they have been in Korea or know the culture and history of Korea. I think it is important for people to go out explore the world as much as they can.
2
Carlos Fuentes decided to focus on writing about how important language is in order to express culture and history. If people do not use language to share culture, history and other interesting stories then they cannot exist. Carlos Fuentes specifically talks about his Latin American culture and how it is important it is for people to share stories and recap different cultures in different countries. This purpose of his essay could be backed up with the style of his writing, the point of view, the examples, and the targeted audience.
There are many different ways for us to interpret the quote "I could tell you stories." As we discussed it in the class, she could make up stories or tell true stories, etc. From reading the packet, I personally did not get the impression of her being a person who would lie for attention. She seems like a person with diverse experiences. Since she fell asleep right after she said she could tell stories, it seems like she was avoiding telling stories or just feeling so overwhelmed to tell stories. She looks very happy to be with her husband and I assume that it was hard for her to obtain that happiness and she wants to keep it.
So, the discussion...
I personally love having discussions in class. I think they are the best. It looks like everyone in the class is enjoying the discussions. They all participate in them and make great remarks. One comment on a particular topic leads to another comment. All these comments help everyone to push hard to think deeply about the topic.
We have a really big class, which could make it harder for people to participate in discussions. However, everyone participates and shares their opinion and make the discussions a lot more interesting. So far, I really enjoy the class. Hopefully, I will continue to enjoy this class.
