Fuentes highly encourages us to use language to create cultures. By telling stories and describing them, people who have never been to the other countries could get a sense of other cultures. I agree with Fuentes in a seine that it is important to share different cultures. Not many people travel all around the world and experience different cultures. Even if people travel, it is very easy for them to not get the unique cultural experiences since English is the international language. People do not seem to have to know the other language to communicate or travel. Everywhere we go, there are people who can speak English, which makes everything a lot nicer for us. However when we are trying to get to know the other culture the language can be a barrier. For example, there are things that I could not explain to my American friends about some of the Korean expressions unless they have been in Korea or know the culture and history of Korea. I think it is important for people to go out explore the world as much as they can.

Carlos Fuentes decided to focus on writing about how important language is in order to express culture and history. If people do not use language to share culture, history and other interesting stories then they cannot exist. Carlos Fuentes specifically talks about his Latin American culture and how it is important it is for people to share stories and recap different cultures in different countries. This purpose of his essay could be backed up with the style of his writing, the point of view, the examples, and the targeted audience.

There are many different ways for us to interpret the quote "I could tell you stories." As we discussed it in the class, she could make up stories or tell true stories, etc. From reading the packet, I personally did not get the impression of her being a person who would lie for attention. She seems like a person with diverse experiences. Since she fell asleep right after she said she could tell stories, it seems like she was avoiding telling stories or just feeling so overwhelmed to tell stories. She looks very happy to be with her husband and I assume that it was hard for her to obtain that happiness and she wants to keep it.

So, the discussion...

I personally love having discussions in class. I think they are the best. It looks like everyone in the class is enjoying the discussions. They all participate in them and make great remarks. One comment on a particular topic leads to another comment. All these comments help everyone to push hard to think deeply about the topic.
We have a really big class, which could make it harder for people to participate in discussions. However, everyone participates and shares their opinion and make the discussions a lot more interesting. So far, I really enjoy the class. Hopefully, I will continue to enjoy this class.
