discussion

It was hard to have a discussion because we weren't discussing about how we were going to solve the problem, but we were talking about the problem itself. What really made me upset was that it seemed like people were just trying to say what they have to say but not listen to one another.

It will probably take a lot more people than just one English class to let people know that it is offensive to most of the women how many ads subjugate women. I know there were people who did not care about the content of the ads, and because they didn't really pay attention to the ads, it didn’t really bother them at all. However, there are people who watch them. Like how Eli was talking about what a boy who goes to a public school might do to a girl. Their environment and how they are raised affect people. And, subconsciously, people are affected by the ads. How much you are affected may differ from other individuals, but because we are exposed to these ads from early on, we are almost immune to it.

I know what you mean about no one wanting to listen to each other. People are very opinionated in our class. I think it can get a little crazy sometimes, but I still enjoy it.

I do not remember Eli talking about public school boys but maybe that was when I took my 10 second bathroom/snack break. But I definitely think that the environment that you grow up in affects how you treat people around you, and in this case women. I also think that we have all become kind of immune to the sexual ads, unless they are really shocking. And I do think that ads do affect people on some level even if they think that they do not. There is a reason that you buy the brand of soap that you buy, or the makeup or whatever.

Hey girl!

Yeah I understand where you are comming from with the whole deal about it's frustrating because you can't really deal with this big of an issue in one day. I definitely felt like there were people who weren't willing to listen to other people and at least consider what they had to say. There were many people getting caught up in the fact that the article was radically feminist and not in the fact that it was radically feminist for a reason! This stuff DOES happen!

The fact though that ads affect us consciously and subconciously is a very good argument. People always pose the question of nature versus nurture as it pertains to many things! Are you born sexist of does it happen by integration of knowledge on multiple levels of consciousness? Definitely the latter. Whether you realize it or not, what you see and hear affects you and for this stuff to be in our media 24/7 is not good.
